Alibaba brings forward the commercial launch of its V900 AI accelerator to the first quarter of 2027
Alibaba now plans mass production and the commercial launch of its V900 AI accelerator in the first quarter of 2027, compared with the third-quarter availability announced in May. A competitive offering that actually ships could give cloud customers an additional alternative to Nvidia.
Alibaba brings the V900 forward to early 2027 to compete with Nvidia
Alibaba announced on September 22, 2026, at its Apsara conference in Hangzhou, mass production and the commercial launch of its V900 AI accelerator in the first quarter of 2027. The group is thus bringing forward the schedule for this chip, designed by T-Head, its semiconductor design division.
Reuters reported on May 20 that the V900 would be available in the third quarter of 2027. The V900 was therefore already on Alibaba’s roadmap. The new development on September 22 is the earlier deadline, with deliveries still in the future.
Reuters places this strategy in the context of US restrictions. For companies that purchase or operate AI computing resources, an additional offering could diversify sourcing options, provided the hardware is actually available and competitive.
The V900 fits into a computing system
An accelerator performs the computations needed to train models and generate their responses, a process called inference. These operations also involve servers, a network connecting the machines, and software that manages the computations. Performance on a given task depends on this entire system.
