Malaysia discloses seizure of 30 servers equipped with AI chips at Kuala Lumpur airport
Malaysian customs officials disclosed on 28 October 2026 the seizure of 30 servers containing advanced artificial intelligence chips. The shipment was intercepted on 15 October in a warehouse in the free trade zone at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Its value is estimated at nearly 49.5 million ringgit, or approximately 12.1 million dollars. The shipping document described the servers as electronic components. Customs officials say this description was intended to avoid detection and that their re-export required a permit. An investigation is underway.
The authorities say the servers came from one Asian country and were due to be re-exported to another. They have disclosed neither the brand and exact origin of the chips nor the shipment’s final destination.
Some advanced chips are classified as dual-use goods because they can be used for civilian applications and potentially for military technologies. The strategic trade permit is used to control the transit of the sensitive goods concerned.
Since July 2025, Malaysia has required a permit for the export, transit and transshipment of high-performance AI chips of American origin. This rule comes amid US restrictions on China’s access to advanced semiconductors. It does not establish the origin of the chips seized in Kuala Lumpur.
Customs officials attribute at least five cases to the same suspected network and estimate the combined value of the seizures at more than 100 million ringgit. A Malaysian company that facilitated the shipment has been summoned to assist with the investigation. Customs officials say no arrests have yet been made.
