Tata Communications announces an Indian fiber network dedicated to AI
Tata Communications announced on October 26, 2026, a project to build approximately 10 000 kilometers of new terrestrial fiber in India. The operator plans to invest between $400 and $450 million to connect data centers and artificial intelligence hubs. It calls the project AI Super Highway.
The first phase is set to serve the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor. Moneycontrol places Vizag in the second phase, followed by Bhubaneswar and, in Gujarat, Jamnagar and GIFT City in the third phase.
Connecting data centers to international cables
Tata also plans to connect data centers to international submarine cable landing stations and to its global network. The announced 10 000 kilometers refer to terrestrial fiber.
Fiber carries data exchanged between computing centers. Higher throughput allows more data to be transmitted per second. If a computation is waiting for data from another site, a long transmission delay can delay its resumption. This general explanation does not measure the performance of the network announced by Tata.
Reuters cites cloud providers, banks and global services centers among the organizations Tata seeks to connect to data center hubs.
Moneycontrol reports that capital will be deployed over three to five years. The Economic Times places the three-phase network expansion between fiscal years 2030 and 2036. These figures refer to spending and infrastructure expansion respectively, without setting a date for the network to enter service.
Rupesh Chokshi, a Tata Communications executive, told Moneycontrol that the group is targeting 30 to 40% of the addressable market for connections between data centers. He mentioned advanced discussions. The outlet reports that Tata has not announced any contracts specific to this new network.
